I was as shocked to hear the tragic news as many
of you were, and I have been praying that Representative Giffords has a full and
speedy recovery. My heart also goes out to her husband Mark.
Because all of us from the different parties love our country so much, we often
get frustrated at the political differences that seem to divide us. Sometimes,
we are tempted to scorn each other verbally, or far far worse - to act violently
- because of our lack of appreciation for each other's positions. But what we
all have observed recently - is that violent acts do not gain anyone's political
ear or win the admiration of anyone. Such acts only earn contempt.
Shortly after the election, I sent Gabrielle Giffords a message of
congratulations. She was quick to call me back, and I was amazed at the warmth
of her response. I feel so very very sorry that she now must endure this, and it
is my sincerest hope that she will be back in Washington, doing what she loves.
When she does return to Washington, I would ask everyone - but especially those
who disagree with her political stances - to be as constructive as possible and
help her out. You have all heard the expression, "Be the change you seek". Well,
if you want to see real change in politics - learn from what has transpired and
don't just point the finger at your representative - do some of the legwork
yourself and present your representative with a solution, not just a problem.
Right now, my prayer for Gabrielle Giffords, is that she will be able to see how
her fellow countrymen temporarily put their differences aside, and all came
together in prayer for her.
